  5. What is PopExtras?
  6.     PopExtras consists of two parts, the first being a button which
  7. is attached to the status bar of the background application (eg
  8. Notepad).  Tapping this button will present you with a pop-up menu
  9. containing a user definable list of apps installed on the Newton. 
  10. Tapping an app name will open that app!  The second part of PopExtras is
  11. the utility that is used to select which apps will be displayed in the
  12. popup button.  This utility consists of a scrolling list which contains
  13. the apps installed on the Newton.  Tapping on an item in the list will
  14. place a check to the left of the app name, tapping again will remove the
  15. check. Simple.  There is also a Clear button which will uncheck all
  16. items.  Next to the Clear button is an Open button which can be used to
  17. open the selected app (whether it is checked or not).  Checking and
  18. unchecking items will be immediately reflected in the popup menu (only
  19. visible if you close the Extras Drawer after opening PopExtras).

  21. Some Important Information
  22.     PopExtras will create a union soup called “PopExtras:comet”, at
  23. install time, on your Newton.  This soup is used to store the items that
  24. will be displayed in the popup.  I have tested PopExtras rigorously to
  25. ensure it does not incur the wrath of the ‘Grip-O-Death’ god.  This is
  26. not a guarantee, just a fair amount of reassurance ;-)
  27.     It should also be noted that this version of PopExtras will only run
  28. on Newton 2.0 devices.

  30. ShareWare notice
  31.     PopExtras is shareware, so if you like this app and intend using
  32. it for any reasonable length of time, you are encouraged to send a
  33. cheque, cash or money order equivalent to US$10 to the below address.
  34. Ensure you place cash inside a card or similar (to keep prying eyes
  35. out!), and mail it.

  45.     When you pay your shareware registration fee I will send you a
  46. registration code, which will unleash the _power_ of PopExtras! Well,
  47. it'll remove that annoying "EVALUATION COPY!" notice anyway... :)
  48.     If you've registered a previous version AND haven't received your
  49. rego code then please contact me...it means I couldn't contact you via
  50. email because you've moved service providers or someother lame reason!

  58. Distribution of PopExtras
  59.     You are hereby encouraged to copy and distribute PopExtras for
  60. non-commercial use with the following restrictions:
  61.  
  62.     • You may copy and distribute the “PopExtras Package” file
  63. (containing "PopExtras.pkg" and "READ ME.txt"), but
  64. not the individual Newton application and document files.  This will
  65. ensure that users receive a complete package with all documentation.  
  66.  
  67.     • You may not modify the contents of the “PopExtras Package”
  68. file in
  69. any way.  Re-packaging into other formats (eg .ZIP) is ok, just include
  70. all the original files.

  72.     • You may not charge any fee for the use, copying, or
  73. distribution
  74. of the product.

  76.     • Organisers of 'shareware library' CD-ROMs (eg 'AMUG - BBS In A
  77. Box' - hello Michael, Ashley et al!) etc, who wish to include the
  78. “PopExtras Package” file, should contact me first.  Under most
  79. circumstances, I will allow its inclusion.

  81. Last but not least.
  82.     Thanks go to Peter Marks for the initial idea, and to all those
  83. souls out there who asked me to produce a version that would work under
  84. NOS2.0.

  86. Version Log:
  87. 2.0    • Whoa...big step, NOS 2.0 complience...only took a few hours
  88. to get it running nicely under 2.0. No functional changes. Some code
  89. tidying. I'm not using quite so many undocumented features now! There
  90. are still a couple - but I won't tell if you don't! Added registration
  91. scheme to save sending out personalised copies everytime someone
  92. registered...
  93. 1.2    • Attended to 'PopExtras Most Wanted Fix'.  When an app was
  94. deleted from the Newt, and it appeared in PopExtras' soup, it was
  95. impossible to remove that single item.  You had to clear the soup and
  96. re-enter all your apps.  This problem has been fixed by showing all apps
  97. that appear in PopExtras' soup.  Apps that are in the soup, but not on
  98. the Newt, are displayed in bold (and underlined, you can't miss 'em!). 
  99. To clear them from the soup just remove their 'tick' by tapping on them.
  100.     • Suppressed the stray 'ink-spots' which sometimes appeared when
  101. tapping an item in the application list (purely cosmetic problem, but it
  102. annoyed the hell out of me!).
  103.     • Added ability to access the Card package.
  104.     • Increased speed of PopExtras startup.
  105.     • Added registration name in about screen.
  106.  
  107. 1.1    • Added Notification (other than a beep), if the item that is
  108. selected from the menu cannot be found on the Newt.  
  109.     • Added support for opening books.
  110.     • Added company logo to about screen (sorry John!).
  111.     • The popup list is now sorted alphabetically.
  112.     • The list of installed apps is also sorted alphabetically.
  113.     • Scrolling within PopExtras is now a bit quicker.
